Hittite inscriptions deciphered in the 1920s by the Swiss scholar Emil Forrer testify to the existence of a mountain country, the Hayasa and/or the Azzi, lying around Lake Van . Several prominent authorities agree in placing Azzi to the north of Ishuwa. Others see Hayasa and Azzi as identical.

Armenia is one of the oldest countries in the world with a recorded history of about 3500 years. The oldest known ancestors of modern Armenians, the Hayasa- AZZI tribes, also known as Proto-Armenians, were indigenous to the Armenian Highland in Eastern Anatolia . These tribes formed the Nairi tribal union, which existed until late 13th century BC.

There are Hittite writings belonging to the second half of the second millennium B.C. which mention a city named Chajasa. This city was the capital of the land AZZI , and this land was localized at the coast of the Black Sea . In fact, it is very probable that the land of the Amazons at the river Thermodon and the country AZZI are geographically identical. The name AZZI is similar to the term Amazon. A well-known German researcher of Hittite History, named Friedrich Cornelius, has suggested that the term Amazon is formed by the word Am - a popular word for mother or woman (also in Hittite language) - in combination with the name of the land AZZI , so Amazon means Woman of the land AZZI . Moreover, the name of the capital of the AZZI -land Chajasa is very similar to the name of the Amazon city Chadesia.

Despite these restrictions imposed upon Hukkanash, he was no meek and submissive brother-in-law in political and military affairs. As a condition for the release of the thousands of Hittite prisoners held in his domain, he demanded first the return home of the Hayasan prisoners confined at Hatti. The Hittite Empire had been subject to constant harassment by its eastern neighbours, from the basin of the upper Euphrates to Aravanna (Erevan of today) and Tebruzzi ( Tabriz ). One of the most important of these enemies crouched on its eastern border was the kingdom of Hayasa- AZZI (the name AZZI represents the Alzi or Alzini of the Assyrian and Urartean inscriptions).

AZZI : also known as the Brilliant Realm, AZZI is the northernmost of the Cassawaran states, although it has a large Vascones population. The King of AZZI , known as the Light of Wisdom, has always been a stalwart servant of the Church of the One, True Faith. AZZI is a centre of trade and learning in the Crescent lands, although it is poor in metals and arable lands… Due to increased tensions with their southern brethren, the King of AZZI is said to have recently employed and ennobled a large contingent of mercenary warriors.

A fragmented tablet dated to Years 9 and 10 of the Hittite king Mursili II records a feud between the dowager queen Tawananna and the wife of the king. The queen cursed the king's wife and son, and, subsequently, the other woman died while Mursili was in Kummanni celebrating a festival of Hepat. We then find Mursili marching against the land of AZZI when an omen of the sun occurred. The omen was interpreted as being a sign against the dowager queen, whom Mursili then demoted.
"So the queen cursed me, my wife (and) my son before (the) god Ishara, and then sacrificed us (?). Then my wife died because of that. But (when) I marched toward the land of AZZI , the sun became eclipsed. But the queen [I made an inquiry about the sun omen. But he (or she)] said: That the sun became eclipsed refers to the queen (and) does not refer to the king. Now when your wife died because of that, the princes of Hatti want another queen to reign; may it be that they choose Lady Ammina, and may it also be that they choose the daughter of Ammina. But his majesty entered the land of Hajasa." [61]
